Organisation and executive-function strategies

Executive function covers planning, starting, switching and finishing. When it is unreliable, external structure does the work that internal structure otherwise would.

Externalise it

Anything held only in your head competes for attention. Lists, calendars and visible reminders free up capacity rather than indicating a lack of it.

Shrink the first step

Starting is often the hardest part. Making the first step small enough to be almost trivial removes most of the friction.

Design for your attention, not an ideal version of it

A system that works on a difficult day is more useful than one that only works on a good day.
