GP shared care: what it is and why it cannot be guaranteed

Shared care is an arrangement where a GP takes over prescribing after a specialist has established a stable dose, usually at NHS prescription cost.

It is the GP’s decision

A shared care agreement is entered into voluntarily by the GP practice. No private provider can require a GP to accept one, and PRC cannot guarantee that a GP will agree.

Practices differ

Some practices accept shared care routinely, some accept it in certain circumstances, and some decline it as a matter of policy. This varies by area and can change.

Plan for both outcomes

Before starting medication privately, it is sensible to assume you may need to continue paying privately, and to be pleasantly surprised if shared care is agreed.
